Kashmir has registered a rise in suicide cases, over the past two years because of varied reasons ranging from unemployment to marital conflict.
A total of 61 persons committed suicide in 2006, the number has surged up dramatically this year and stands at 42 with only five months of the current year gone.
Society of Kashmir is today faced with many issues that strengthened the tendency of suicide among the inhabitants of the valley. Militancy for over two decades has also played its part in the increasing numbers. The environment, which is not congenial for proper physical and psychological growth, leads to decrease in the levels of tolerance among humans.
Though, violence cannot be fully blamed for suicides in Kashmir but it does create a situation whereby a person might consider ending his or her life. The other reasons responsible are failed love affairs, failure of students to meet the expectation of their parents and marital discord.
The young men and women in their mid-20s outnumber all others in ending their lives. And among them, it is the fairer sex that has registered most suicide deaths. Last year statistics reveal the truth, out of a total 61 suicide cases, 43 were young and middle-aged women while out of 42 cases this year, 25 belong to this category.
Women are more sensitive and emotionally weaker than men, having lesser tolerance levels. Young girls in the valley have been victims of sexual abuse and rape by the militants that enhances the chances of more suicides among the women folk.
Of late, drug abuse related deaths have been recorded in Kashmir.
There is need for a support system to check the trend of rising suicides. Counseling facilities need to be opened so that the suicidal trend is curtailed. And once, militancy is curbed, we will certainly see the difference.
